Eid-el-Kabir: FG Reduces NRC Train Fares By 50%

The Federal Government has approved a 50 per cent reduction in fares on all train services operated by the Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC) ahead of the Eid-el-Kabir celebrations.

The announcement was contained in a statement issued by the Permanent Secretary of the Federal Ministry of Transportation, Funsho Adebiyi.

According to the ministry, the fare reduction is part of efforts by the Federal Government to ease transportation costs for Nigerians travelling during the festive period.

“The Federal Government, through the Federal Ministry of Transportation (FMT), has approved a 50% fare discount on all train services operated by the Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC) as part of measures to ease transportation costs for Nigerians during the Eid-el-Kabir celebration,” the statement read.

The ministry stated that the discount takes effect from Tuesday, May 26, 2026, and will remain in place until Monday, June 1, 2026.

It added that ticket fares on all NRC passenger train services across the country had been reduced by half of the existing approved rates within the period.

Passengers who had already purchased tickets before the announcement will also benefit from the initiative through a rebate arrangement.

“Passengers who had earlier purchased tickets at the full fare before the announcement will be entitled to a 50% rebate, reusable for train rides on or before Monday, June 1, 2026,” the statement added.

The ministry, however, clarified that train schedules and timetables would remain unchanged throughout the period.

It further appreciated Nigerians for their continued support and wished Muslim faithful a peaceful and joyous Eid-el-Kabir celebration.

The development comes as travellers have begun moving across several parts of the country, including Lagos, ahead of the holiday period.

Meanwhile, the Federal Government has declared Wednesday, May 27, and Thursday, May 28, 2026, as public holidays to mark this year’s Eid-ul-Adha celebration.

In his 2026 Eid-el-Kabir message, President Bola Tinubu called for national unity and assured Nigerians of improved security and economy.

Eid-ul-Adha, also known as Eid-el-Kabir or the Festival of Sacrifice, is one of the most significant celebrations in Islam and is observed by Muslims worldwide.

As part of efforts to ensure safer roads during the festivities, the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Kwara State Sector Command, said it had deployed 950 personnel, including officers, marshals, special marshals and first responders, across the state.
