Bangladesh Mourns As 24 Dead After Bus Plunges Into River

Officials said the nation is reeling after a passenger bus carrying around 40 people plunged into a river, leaving at least 24 dead.

Bangladesh authorities have confirmed that at least 24 people were killed after a passenger bus fell into the Padma River while attempting to board a ferry in Rajbari district, about 100 km from Dhaka.

The accident happened on Wednesday at Daulatdia when the driver reportedly lost control while approaching the ferry, causing the bus to overturn and sink nearly 30 feet into the river, according to police and fire officials.

Rescue teams recovered 22 bodies from inside the submerged vehicle, including six men, 11 women and five children. Two additional women later died after being pulled from the water, bringing the death toll to 24.

Emergency responders, including four fire service units and 10 divers, led the operation, with support from the army, police, coast guard and local authorities as search efforts continued.

Officials say more passengers could still be missing as the search goes on. The tragedy highlights ongoing safety concerns, as hundreds of people die each year in road and ferry accidents across Bangladesh.
