Taiwan Warns China May Exploit US Focus On Middle East War

Taiwan fears Beijing may take advantage of Washington’s growing military commitments in the Middle East, with officials cautioning that any shift in US focus could embolden China to increase pressure on the self governed island

One of the world’s most sensitive geopolitical flashpoints, Taiwan has faced sustained military pressure from China, which considers the island part of its territory and has ramped up drills and air incursions in recent months.

Security officials in Taipei say renewed large scale Chinese air force activity around Taiwan since mid-March signals an effort to test the region’s defences while US resources are stretched.

“This is a moment for China to exercise influence,” a senior Taiwan security official said, warning that Beijing may seek to create instability as American forces are redeployed.

Despite the concerns, officials emphasised that the United States retains the capacity to respond to multiple global threats, maintaining that its military strength in the Indo-Pacific remains robust.

Analysts say a prolonged conflict in the Middle East could still have wider consequences, potentially draining US resources, diverting strategic attention and shaping China’s calculations on Taiwan.

Taiwan has also raised alarm over China’s use of “cognitive warfare”, including propaganda efforts aimed at undermining public confidence, particularly around energy security and defence preparedness.

Chinese state linked commentators have pointed to perceived weaknesses in US military equipment based on developments in the Middle East conflict, while also studying American battlefield tactics and response strategies.

Meanwhile, Beijing has continued to promote the idea of closer integration with Taiwan, touting infrastructure and energy incentives, proposals that Taipei has dismissed as political pressure tactics.

Authorities in Taiwan say they remain committed to strengthening their own defences, stressing the need for resilience as tensions continue to simmer across the Taiwan Strait.
