Impostor Uses AI To Mimic Marco Rubio In Bid To Deceive US Officials

An impostor who used AI to mimic the voice and writing style of Secretary of State Marco Rubio targeted high-ranking officials in a sophisticated attempt to gain access to sensitive information, a senior US official has confirmed.

According to a State Department cable obtained by The Washington Post, the unknown actor reached out to foreign ministers, a US governor, and a sitting member of Congress using artificial intelligence-powered voice and text messages that closely resembled Rubio’s mannerisms.

Authorities are still working to identify the source of the impersonation, which they suspect was aimed at manipulating powerful figures “with the goal of gaining access to information or accounts.”

Rubio’s office issued a cable warning State Department personnel of the impersonation attempts and urging increased vigilance.

The case highlights the growing threat posed by AI-driven misinformation and impersonation tactics, especially when aimed at infiltrating diplomatic or governmental circles.

“This is a new frontier in deception,” one US official said on condition of anonymity, adding that the technology used shows a high level of sophistication. “The risk to national security is real when trusted voices can be so easily replicated.”

Investigations are ongoing, and the State Department has not disclosed whether any information was compromised.
