Israel has agreed to a mutual ceasefire with Iran following a proposal by US President Donald Trump, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s office confirmed on Tuesday, stating that the operation’s goals had been achieved.
“Israel thanks President Trump and the United States for their support in defence and their participation in eliminating the Iranian nuclear threat,” the statement read. It added that the ceasefire agreement was reached “in full coordination” with President Trump.
“In light of the achievement of the operation’s goals, and in full coordination with President Trump, Israel agreed to the President’s proposal for a mutual ceasefire.”
The move follows a dramatic escalation over the weekend, during which Israel—later joined by the United States—conducted coordinated strikes on Iranian nuclear and ballistic missile facilities. Tehran responded with a wave of missile attacks, which Israel’s ambulance service said resulted in the deaths of at least four people.
Trump confirmed the ceasefire on Tuesday, saying it was now in effect and urging both countries to abide by its terms. “Do not violate it,” he said in remarks to reporters.
While Iran has consistently denied pursuing nuclear weapons, Israeli officials have long warned that Tehran’s enrichment programme posed an existential threat. The US-Israeli strikes were launched on grounds that Iran was nearing weapons capability, an accusation Iran’s leadership has dismissed.
Responding to the ceasefire announcement, Netanyahu’s office warned that Israel would respond forcefully to any violation of the truce. The Prime Minister is expected to issue a formal address later on Tuesday.
